Signs You Have Bed Bugs

• Adult bed bugs: which are light to reddish-brown, flat and oval in shape, and do not have hind wings
• Bed bug bites: these will occur where there is exposed skin. They prefer the face, neck, and arms of a sleeping person. The bites will usually produce swelling and itchy, reddish spots may appear after the swelling subsides.
• Blood smears: you will find these on your pillows or sheets caused by bed bugs being crushed
• Dark spots: tiny spots of excrement, which look like dried specks of blood, will be found in dark corners and crevices
• Eggs and eggshells: these are about 1mm and yellow skin that nymphs shed

Ants

In 2013, the National Pest Management Association reported that ants remain the number one pest in the country. The two species commonly seen in Utah are the pavement ant and the carpenter ant.  Although most tend to live outdoors in nests, they enter homes when in need of food and shelter. Pavement ants may be nothing more than a nuisance to the homeowner, or they may bite or sting the home’s inhabitants. When they do so, pain, irritation, or swelling may occur. Fleas

Spiders

There are two types of spiders in your area to watch out for:

Brown Recluse: Also known as the violin spider, is a small-sized arachnid of approximately 7-12mm (1/4″ – 1/2′) long. The color of the brown recluse spider is generally brown. Its body shows a peculiar cephalothorax with a dark brown violin-shaped spot; the legs are light brown and the oval-shaped abdomen is dark brown, yellow, or greenish-yellow. The most important characteristic is the presence of 3 pairs of eyes in the cephalothorax. Normally, all spiders have 4 pairs (8 altogether). It has a rather shy and nonaggressive behavior and hides in the darkest and smallest locations of your home. Occasionally the Brown Recluse Spider will bite when they feel threatened. Their bites cause skin deterioration and you will need to see a doctor immediately.

Black Widow: The bite of the female black widow spider can cause severe symptoms. Its venom is rarely dangerous for adults, though it can be fatal for little children and senior adults. It can be easily identified due to its crisp blackness, big spherical abdomen and, of course, the red sort of hourglass symbol located on their abdomen.

Wasps/Yellow Jackets

Yellow Jackets are often mistakenly called “bees” but they are actually Wasps. They pose a serious threat to many homeowners, especially in Utah. Having wasps circling around your head can be quite a nuisance and dealing with a wasp sting can be very painful. The situation becomes dangerous when someone is allergic. If someone in your home is allergic to wasps, even one sting can result in serious infection or a visit to the emergency room. Though wasps usually stay out of the way and rarely cause problems, they can attack suddenly if they feel threatened. Yellow Jackets are notorious for moving into eaves, crawlspaces and even behind vinyl siding. Earwigs

Garden plants commonly injured by earwigs in Utah include annual flowers (especially marigolds, dahlias and zinnias), herbs, roses, raspberries, strawberries, apricots, peaches, sweet corn tassels, and silks.  Because earwigs are beneficial due to their predaceous and decomposer feeding habits, they should only be controlled when causing harm.

There is no immediate cause for concern if you find box elder bugs invading your home. They will not bring diseases into your home and they will not bite. They are generally one of the less destructive agricultural pests. These insects generally do not swarm in and devour trees, shrubs, flowers, and crops even though they tend to move like locusts. Although with some larger infestations, box elder bugs have been known to kill trees and other vegetation surrounding your home. Here are a few tips that may be helpful in determining if you have a Box Elder Bug problem:

The Box Elder is a small, oval-shaped bug with wings. They are usually black in color and they are identifiable by the red stripes on their bodies and wings.

During the warmer spring and summer months, box elders will invade maple, box elder, and ash trees. During the winter months, they will nest in homes and offices and hibernate unless the rooms are heated.

Signs of Infestation:

• Plantlife, such as flowers and leaves are boxelder bugs’ staple food source. These pests also destroy the trees that they live in by drinking the nutrients the tree provides.
• A Boxelder bug will lay its rust-colored eggs in its host tree or on the leaves of the tree. They hatch in a couple of days and develop completely in a few, short months.
• Plant life will begin to die and dissipate and the trees in your yard will slowly fade. When box elders enter your home you will notice them next to the warm structures within your home. Their droppings are also noticeable and will leave stains on furniture and clothing.

Rodents

If you have a rodent in your home, it’s probably a typical house mouse, which is light brown to dark gray or black in color. They typically are about 7-8 inches in size. All these little contortionists need is about a quarter-inch of leeway to gain access to everything you own. These little creatures may be cute but they can be a big nuisance. They eat holes in your walls, wires, and anything from cereal and fresh fruit to cookies and pet food. Any rations they leave behind are likely to be contaminated since mice are known carriers of diseases, bacteria, and the previously-mentioned fleas. Within two months, two mice can become 200.
