3 Ways to Bug-Proof Your Home

When bugs invade a home, they create a number of problems for homeowners. They can cause allergic reactions, spread diseases, damage the structure of your property, and generally create a nuisance.

Once a few insects set up nest in your home, it’s vital that you get the problem taken care of as quickly as possible. Insects reproduce quickly, and within a very short period of time you can have several generations of bug families living in your home—and their numbers will grow exponentially.

Stop the problem before it starts

The best and fastest thing is to keep bugs out of your home in the first place. In order to do this, you need to remember that bugs, like almost any other living creature need three things to survive: food, water, and shelter. If you prevent them from getting any one of the three, chances are good that the bugs will start looking for some place else to set up shop.

Here are some steps for making your home bug-proof:

1. Seal cracks and gaps around doors and windows. You may be surprised by all the gaps and cracks in doors that lead outside your home. Even the tiniest gap provides a great opening for bugs. You might also want to consider installing screens over doors and windows.
2. Keep your yard in great shape. If you notice water pooling anywhere in your yard, consider getting your lawn re-graded. Mosquitoes and other insects love water, and they’ll thrive around puddles. Insects also love piles of leaves and garbage, so be sure to get those out of your lawn.
3. Clean regularly and keep trash covered. All those crumbs that you drop on the floor while preparing dinner can be very attractive to bugs. Sweep the floor every time you use the kitchen, and make sure that your garbage bins are covered.
